Your Zone of Genius is a state of operation in which you are performing at your best with a feeling of energized focus, full involvement, and creative flow.

This is where we access our greater wisdom and infallible instincts. Most of us can experience this state from time to time and in certain areas of life. It takes a specific set of skills to master your Zone and to make sure you can apply this competency regularly in each arena of your life.

Once you learn how to tap into these inner resources, the benefits are exponential.

Conversely, the risks of not learning to access this state are significant. Here are some of the tell-tale signs that you need to pay better attention and up-level this skill set.

1. Running Out of Steam

Emotional, mental, and physical exhaustion caused by ineffective methods of handling stress. Do you feel exhausted at the end of the day or have a short fuse? Stress itself is not the issue. In James Loehr’s book Stress for Success he contends that there is a difference between stress exposure and stress response. Stress exposure is a stimulus for growth so long as we handle it as such.

Burnout occurs when you allow yourself to flat-line instead of creating peaks, plateaus, and valleys in your mental, emotional and physical experience. In this case, consistency is the enemy – inconsistency is the antidote.

2. Shattered Sleep Patterns

The occasional off-night or midnight oil burning is one thing but if you are consistently losing z’s and “getting by” on too few hours then, the zone will escape you. There is well-documented evidence that lapses in focus increase as do the risk of hazards like diabetes and heart attack.

to crush it”

3. Functioning from Fear and Frustration

It’s in our deciding moments that we determine our destiny. When we are not fully in alignment we tend to make choices from fear, fatigue, and frustration which are not the best building blocks of an extraordinary life.

4. Relationship Avoidance

One of the biggest areas of challenge for my high achieving clients have is the interpersonal arena. They feel less competent when interacting with a spouse, children, friends and so they focus their attention where they feel more successful, work, sports, hobbies etc. A truly synergized life is one where even the complexities of personal relationships are navigated with confidence. It is possible to become significantly more skillful in this area with targeted coaching.

5. No longer sporting your college body

OK, we’re grown-ups now and unless you are an athlete (which some of my clients are) it may be unrealistic to expect to maintain the nubile physique you sported in our prime. BUT, I challenge you to stand naked in front of the mirror, get honest with yourself and assess if you are in age appropriate decent shape. I’m less concerned with aesthetics as everyone has different biology but if you can’t claim physical resiliency and a weight that falls within the range of 8-19% fat for men and 22-33% for women you are reducing your lifespan and your ability to perform at your peak.

Neuroscience has shown that our bodies are a major component of the neural network and it’s not just our head that does the thinking. Our body’s condition impacts how much data we can effectively process.

If you are out of shape admit how you got there…food as comfort, lack of effective exercise, not making time for good nutrition?….and do something about it. The science of exercise has exploded and there are so many super-efficient options available for even busy people. If you can’t shift your resistance to exercise, there may be an underlying issue that needs to be addressed.
